
Loadcell Calibration In The Application

Unlike TAT systems, conventional analog strain gage based load measuring systems usually require
calibration in the users application in the field. The variations in power supply voltage, cabling, and
seemingly minor changes in the electrical grounding of the system usually require in system calibration.
Such a calibration with analog strain gage based technologies requires that the user have a calibration
box which supplies precision voltage or current signals plus the expertise on how to use such a device
to get an accurate system calibration.
TAT loadcell systems, on the other hand, incorporate a unique form of vibrating quartz which produces
an FM signal. An FM signal is inherently more immune to system configuration and parameter variations
and the mechanical design of the loadcell itself is very immune to mounting stress.
Because the several unique features/characteristics of the TAT technology, no special calibration of any
sort is required in the field. TAT factory calibration is very stable and the user can simply rely on
the calibration done at the factory.
In many applications, a dead load (tare) of some sort is placed on the loadcell which will be accurately
reflected in the output signal of the loadcell. With any loadcell this may need to be taken into
account by the user. TAT software allows the user to subtract the dead load from the signal so that it
will not be seen in the output. Since this is done digitally in software, it is stable with time.
In fact all signal properties affectinag accuracy of the TAT signal are inherently very stable over long
time periods and generally periodic recalibration is not required. The only calibration that would be
prudent typically every couple of years, would be checking the system with a calibration weight at a
single load to verify full accuracy. This may require removing the load cell from any system attachment
and taking the loadcell to a lab. In many cases, however, since only a single point calibration is
required, it can often be done without removing the loadcell from the application.
